During my internship, as shown above, we organised events for employees of SAP to participate in. For lunch talk, we would cater lunch bento for employees to eat while sitting in for talks and activities in the pantry. After the lunch talks, the bins in the pantry would always be over-flowed with bento boxes and the cleaners would have a difficult time cleaning up. Hence, I decided to implement the lunch bento separation idea.

I put up signs on the bins in the pantry to prevent employees from throwing their finished bento boxes into them. Instead, employees were to separate their bento boxes and wastes into 5 categories - covers/lids, empty boxes, utensils, food waste and tissue papers. Through this idea, the bins in the pantry after lunch talks were no longer filled with bento boxes. The pantry cleaners also thanked me for making their job easier.
Employees also began to realise the amount of food wastage. Some of them came over to ask the team if we could think of something to reduce the food wastage while some asked to share their bento with their colleagues instead of taking a box themselves.

The team has decided that they will work with the catering company to reduce the amount of food and no longer provide disposable utensils for employees (giving employees a reusable utensils set through events as corporate gifts; should they need to use disposable ones, they would have to pay a small fee [donated to their quarterly Food Distribution] to get a set from the team).
